NIE in Spain 2026: How to Obtain It Step by Step from Any Country The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the tax identification number every foreign national needs to work, open a bank account, rent or buy property, sign a phone contract, or pay taxes in Spain. Unlike a residency permit, the

The NIE is the first number you're going to need in Spain. Without it you can't open a bank account, sign a work contract, rent a flat in your name, or register a car. It's the gateway to everything else.
The good news: the process itself is simple and cheap. The official fee (form 790, code 012) costs €9.84 in 2026. The bad news is that almost nobody explains clearly the two different ways to apply for it, and choosing the wrong one can cost you weeks.
What exactly is the NIE?
It's your personal identification number in Spain. Article 205(1) does not reserve it to any nationality: it covers "those who, because of their economic, professional, social or any other kind of interests, have dealings with Spain" (art. 205.1 of Royal Decree 1155/2024), whether or not you are an EU citizen. You need it if you have economic, professional, or social interests here: you're going to work, buy something, study, or simply live here on a stable basis.
And before you book an appointment: you may not have to apply at all. Article 205(3) requires the Directorate-General of Police to grant the NIE automatically to anyone with an open procedure to obtain a document allowing them to stay in Spain, to anyone with immigration proceedings opened against them, and for visas allowing stays of more than 90 days in any 180. If you are in one of those situations the number reaches you without applying and without meeting the two requirements below.
If you are not in one of those situations — that is, if your link to Spain is economic, professional or social interests — then you do have to apply, and article 205(3) requires both of these: not being in an irregular situation in Spain and stating the reasons for your application. (art. 205.3 of Royal Decree 1155/2024) You do not need a signed work contract or formalized residency.
Important: the NIE never expires and is different from the TIE (the physical card with your photo and fingerprint that proves your residency). The NIE is just the number; the TIE is the card. And note that article 209(1) does not frame it as an option: anyone holding a visa or an authorisation to stay in Spain for more than six months has the right and the duty to obtain it (art. 209.1 of Royal Decree 1155/2024), and must apply in person within one month of entering Spain or of the authorisation taking effect.
Documentation you'll need
- Form EX-15 (Foreigner Identity Number Application), filled in by hand, in Spanish.
- Original passport and full copy (all pages with data, not just the main one).
- Proof of payment of the 790-012 fee (€9.84), paid at a bank before your appointment, not on the day.
- A document explaining the economic, professional, or social reason for your application (job offer, course enrolment, rental contract, etc.). It is not optional: article 205(3)(b) lists it among the requirements that must be met for this route. (art. 205.3.b) of Royal Decree 1155/2024)
Two possible routes: from your home country or already in Spain
What nobody tells you clearly is that the process changes depending on where you are when you apply.
| Where you are | Where you apply | Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| In your home country | Spanish consulate (General Commissariat for Immigration and Borders) | You can have it before you travel. The legal deadline is the same either way |
| Already in Spain | Immigration Office or Police Station | You can provide extra local documentation if you need to |
If you can choose, applying from the consulate before you travel usually saves you time: you arrive with your number already assigned or nearly there, and you can start sorting things out (bank, contract) from day one.
Appointment booking: how to get one in 2026
The process always requires a prior appointment, both at the consulate and in Spain. For police stations and immigration offices on Spanish soil, appointments are booked through the Spanish government's appointment portal (sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es, ICP Plus system). For the consulate, the appointment is booked directly through the relevant consulate's website.
NIE without being registered on the padrón: what you need to know
You can apply for the NIE without being registered on the padrón and without having a fixed address in Spain yet. You'll only be asked for padrón registration later on, for other procedures: your health card, the final TIE, or access to certain local council benefits. Don't let not having housing sorted stop you from taking this first step.
What if you're returning to Spain with Galician roots?
If you're moving back to Spain and have Galician ancestry, you need the NIE just like anyone else from abroad — there's no parallel process. But on top of the NIE, it's worth checking out the Xunta de Galicia's return support schemes, which are compatible with the process. This also applies to Cubans with Galician roots, who in many cases combine the nationality-by-option route with these regional benefits while sorting out their NIE.
Your next step
Before doing anything else, go to the appointment portal today (the consulate if you're outside Spain, or sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es if you're already here) and book your NIE assignment appointment. It's the step that takes longest due to demand, so the sooner you request it, the sooner everything else — bank, contract, rental — gets unblocked.
