Madrid
Practical guide for immigrants in Madrid: paperwork, housing, transport, cost of living and integration resources.
Trámites esenciales
📍 Empadronamiento
Empadronamiento (municipal registration) is the registration of your address at the Ayuntamiento (city hall). It is MANDATORY and the very first thing you need to do.
💡 Empadronamiento is free of charge. You can register even without legal residence papers (irregular status). It is the basis for accessing healthcare, education, and proving residence for arraigo (rooted residence permit).
🏛️ Extranjería
Oficina: Oficina de Extranjería de Madrid - C/ Pradillo, 40
Tiempo medio arraigo: ~5 meses (puede variar)
Immigration appointments in Madrid are extremely hard to get. Try in the early hours (midnight to 7 AM). You can also show up without an appointment at 6 AM and wait in line.
Pedir cita en extranjería →🪪 NIE / TIE
NIE (Foreigner Identity Number): your personal tax/ID number in Spain. TIE (Foreigner Identity Card): the physical card that carries your NIE.
TIE appointments are booked through the Policía Nacional website. This is a different appointment from the immigration office (Extranjería).
Pedir cita para TIE →Alquiler de vivienda
Madrid has a highly competitive rental market. Demand far outstrips supply. As of 2025, Madrid is NOT officially declared a stressed housing market zone (zona de mercado residencial tensionado).
