Opening a Spanish bank account before leaving: Santander Non-Residents Online
You arrive in Spain and the first problem waiting for you is the bank account. You don't have a NIE, the bank asks for one, getting it takes months, and in the meantime your salary has nowhere to go. Santander has a solution that very few people know about: an account with a Spanish IBAN that you can open from any country in Latin America, without leaving home and without needing a NIE.
The most expensive mistake people make
The most common trap is arriving in Spain thinking that opening a bank account is the first thing you'll do in your first week. It isn't, and that mistake can cost you money and weeks of stress.
- Most Spanish banks require a NIE to open an account. Getting one can take between 1 and 3 months.
- Without a Spanish account, receiving your first paycheck gets complicated. Many companies can't easily make international transfers.
- Paying rent is also a problem: many landlords only accept direct debits from accounts with a Spanish IBAN.
- International transfers come with fees of between €5 and €30 per transaction. Every month you wait, you lose money.
The solution: Santander's Online Non-Resident Account
Santander has a product designed exactly for people in your situation: the Online Non-Resident Account. You open it from Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, or any other country, before you even board the plane.
What you get from day one:
- A Spanish IBAN (starting with ES) that you can give to your employer on your first day of work.
- A Visa debit card to pay and withdraw cash in Spain.
- Access to Santander ATMs across Spain.
- A mobile app to manage everything from your phone.
- No NIE required. Just your valid passport.
What you need to open it
The process is 100% digital. Get these documents ready before you start:
- Valid passport (not a national ID card — it has to be an international passport).
- Proof of address in your current country: a utility bill (electricity, water, gas) or bank statement with your name and address. No older than 3 months.
- An email address you use regularly.
- Your mobile phone number.
- An internet connection and a front-facing camera for identity verification.
How to do it, step by step
The whole process takes between 15 and 30 minutes if you have everything ready:
- Go to santander.es and search for "Cuenta Online No Residentes" in the accounts section.
- Fill in the form with your details: name, date of birth, passport number, and current country of residence.
- Upload your documents: a photo of the page in your passport with your photo, and your proof of address.
- Identity verification: you'll be asked for a selfie with your passport or a brief automated video call. You don't speak to any person.
- Wait for confirmation: between 2 and 5 business days. Your IBAN will arrive by email.
- The physical card is sent by post to a Spanish address. If you don't have one yet, make a note to add it once you arrive, or use a family member's or friend's address in Spain.
Watch out for these things
Three things that can complicate the process and that many people discover too late:
1. The card arrives in Spain, not in your country. Santander sends the physical card to the Spanish address you provide. If you don't have a Spanish address yet, you can use the address of a guesthouse where you'll be staying your first few days, or that of a family member or friend.
2. The account can be blocked due to inactivity. If you open it and don't use it in the first few months, Santander may temporarily block it. Make at least one small transfer or payment to keep it active from the very first month.
3. It's a non-resident account, not a standard account. It has some limitations: you may not be able to set up your paycheck as a direct deposit automatically, or access products like mortgages or loans until you have residency. For day-to-day life when you first arrive, though, it's perfect.
